If you don’t have a favorite dog, it can be hard to decide which breed to buy. The first step is to look at what size dog you prefer. Can you manage a large dog where you live? Or is your house small? Small dogs can provide great friendship. And there is a lot of variation in the temperament and look of a small dog. Whilst toy dogs are amongst the most well known of the small dogs, there are others that bear more resemblance to their larger cousins.

I’ll run through three breeds in this article – whippets, brussels griffons, and welsh terriers.

Brussels Griffon Dog Breed

The human-like eyes of the brussels griffon are believed to have been part of the inspiration behind the creation of the ewoks by George Lucas in the Star Wars films. Looking at these cute dogs, you can see the kinship.

Brussels griffons are particularly sensitive and devoted dogs who will be more closely bonded with one person than others. They should be socialized when they are young pups. Brussels griffon are not really well suited as a family pet because of their sensitivity and one-person nature.

Brussels griffon get along well with other animals, including cats. You may need to keep an eye out on how they interact with bigger dogs, however. Unaware of their size, they may challenge for dominance, with fights ensuing.

Welsh Terriers

Welsh terriers have been described as calm for a terrier, but probably not as calm as other dogs. They have a sturdy look, and lots of personality, especially the boys. Welsh terriers are affectionate, inquisitive, extroverted, joyous, and without fear.

Used to keep the rat and vermin population down, and because of this, welsh terriers love to chase things – including cats. Consequently, if you own a cat, this probably isn’t the ideal pet for you.

Great with children,  welsh terriers need a backyard where they can’t escape as they like nothing better than to dig, and could thus escape. When taking your welshie for a walk, it’s important he stays on the leash, as his road sense when on a quest for fun is not good at all.

Welsh terriers need quite a bit of time from their owners. They need grooming regularly, and get bored when left alone for many hours in a day. They are better suited to someone with a part time job rather than a full time job. When they’re bored, they can be destructive around the house.

Whippet Dog Breed

Whippets are a type of sighthound dog, so named because they hunt using sight and speed instead of smell. whippets are small, elegant dogs, ranging in height from 18.5 to 20 inches for male whippets, or 17.5 to 18.5 inches for female whippets. And the whippet dog breed look just like miniature greyhounds!

In temperament, whippets are like toy dogs, in that they are happy to sleep on your lap. These are very loyal dogs, bonding with their owner strongly, though still friendly to strangers and children. The whippet dog breed are very gentle, so much so that they have been used in aged care facilities.

Whippets need to be kept indoors. With such thin coats, they will be too cold outside, and they have a strong bond to their owners. Whippets make great apartment dogs if you are willing to exercise them regularly.
