Building a Dog House
Posted by dogstrollers in Dog Cages, Dog Furniture on April 18, 2009
It is always very important if you are looking to build a house for your dog to consider a few things first. Having a plan is best, this way you make sure you have the correct materials to hand before you start. This also makes sure that the materials you buy are the most appropriate – for example the timber is hard wearing and long lasting. A really good thing to have in your dog house is a raised floor, by this I mean timber base which is not resting on the ground. This makes for a much more comfortable area for your dog and keeps them up out of any dampness or cold which can rise up from the ground.
Also adding a flap door to the house is important as this will easy access for your dog and also means that if it is raining or snowing then the door will keep your pooch warm and dry. Make the door so that it can also be hinged up to allow good ventilation in hot weather. Depending on where you are going to place the dog house you may want to look at also having a deck or porch, so that your dog has somewhere to lay.
Be very aware when using nails or screws when constructing the house that they are nailed or screwed in tightly and flat. A screw or nail protruding out can cause serious injury or infection to your dog and even yourself.
If you have a couple of dogs you may wish to make a bigger house and place in dividers so that your dogs have their own separate areas.
So there you have it, all it takes is a couple of days and a little imagination, and you can have a fabulous house built for your dog and maybe the satisfaction that you have created something yourself. There really is no end to what you can achieve once you get going and you never know you may uncover some real talent for building!
Dog Furniture A Guide For Selecting a Strong Dog House

A dog house is a unique piece of dog furniture and many first time dog house buyers start to wonder just how complex selection needs to be. It can be hard to determine what a makes a great dog house. The very first thing you will need to determine is that you really need an outdoor doghouse at all.
Dogs that have spent most of their lives indoors will not want to move outside no matter how nice the doghouse. Dogs like company and especially single dogs will probably want to stay near you indoors. While your dog may not move outdoors permanently many outdoor dog houses can be a temporary shelter for times when your dog must be outdoors.
Some dogs, such as guard dogs, will need to live outdoors all the time so the houses for these dogs should be very comfortable and strong. A point also to remember is that no matter how long a dog is left outdoors always make sure you check on him often to ensure he is safe.
Don’t think a dog house will be more comfortable simply because it is larger. This is an important point for those who live where the weather gets cold. A dog house which is exceptionally large will not allow your dog to produce enough body heat to warm up the dog house. The best dog house will be just large enough for your dog to lay down and turn around without hitting the sides. The door should be wide enough for your dog to easily enter without kneeling down.
The floor of the dog house should be several inches off the ground to keep water runoff and moisture out. Bedding can be made from straw which should be changed regularly. The roof should be sloped to allow snow to slide off. Some of the chemicals used in pressure treated wood are harmful to your dog so it should not be used for any part of the dog house that your dog comes into contact with. Be sure your dog is built for the weather conditions before you move your dog outdoors. Smaller dogs are usually not built for outdoor life while larger dogs, especially those bred to be working dogs, should have no problem.
Dog Furniture Tips

Another must have piece of dog furniture is a dog bed. When your puppy is not in their dog crate kennel and is out and about in the house, you’ll want to have a spot where they can comfortably lie down whenever they want to. By having doggie bed, you can set boundaries for the places where they can and can’t sit or lie down. So, if there are beds for dogs then they can be told not to go on the couch, and won’t feel bad because they still have a comfy place of their own.
Just like dog crates and kennels, there is a great variety of beds to choose from including a round dog bed, a bolster dog bed, a waterproof dog bed and even a heated dog bed some even resemble beds that we sleep in. Beds also come in all price ranges and if you have a puppy that likes to chew things, then perhaps starting out on the cheaper end would be best.
Along with the selections just mentioned, there are a few other pieces of dog furniture that can be recommended to purchase. They include a dog house for outside, some dog gates to prevent your pet from going in certain rooms, and even a dog ramp if your pooch is getting older and finds it hard getting around.
