‘Down Dog!’

This lesson is best taught outside, in a open area your dog trusts, free from ALL distractions. An empty park, or your back yard is ideal.

Start by getting your dog’s attention and attendance with a preferred reward (diced up meat, cheese or sausage perhaps). You want to start by getting the dog standing out in front of you. Take a treat, hold it at his nose, then move it slowly down to the ground in front of him, but far enough away so he knows he cant have it yet. Restrain him if need be. Use your selected ‘down’ command, voice and hand motion is best, and repeat it until he lays down for you.

After he lies down, let him have his treat by moving it to him, as he is lying down.

It’s best to not let him get the treat, until he has completely done the down part. Don’t offer him the treat for a job half done. If your dog doesn’t want to go down, persuade him gently by pushing on his back, then treat him when he’s down fully. Keep doing this to the point where your dog knows he gets a treat when he is fully lying down. It wont take long if he is mildly hungry!

Once you feel that your dog is going well and lying down with confidence, hold the reward off the ground away from him. We hope he will learn to lie down, anticipating the treat!

Chances are this might get him confused at first, but guide with your hand, pushing him down gently and giving the treat when he does well.

After practice of this, start giving the ‘down’ command (hand motion and voice instruction) before you present the treat to lead the dog down.

Now gradually try to wean your dog off wanting the reward. You can get him to respond to a down sweep of the hand, and a ‘down’ command. Hold the treat further and further away from him, and praise him more and pat him each time he lies down, placing less focus on giving the treat. Get him to accept your praise as reward for obeying the hand and voice commands you give.

Sit Stay Fetch Review

By Sandra Scott

Secrets to Dog Training (formerly named SitStayFetch) has been revamped and was officially launched on February 2, 2009. SitStayFetch has been the top selling dog training course for over four years, and it has been bought by over 64,000 dog owners world-wide. Having taken a close look at it, I understand why it has outsold all other dog training guides on the internet period!. Secrets to Dog Training is even better!

Secrets to Dog Training is an extremely comprehensive guide, written by the world renowned dog professional, Daniel Stevens. This 261-page guide gives dog owners step-by-step and easy to follow instructions which will help them to understand and quickly solve their dog’s behavior problems. It also includes many excellent pictures!

All of the training methods described in the book are tried and true, having been used by Daniel Stevens in his own life as a professional dog trainer.

What is Included?

This course is so comprehensive that the table of contents takes up five pages just to list everything that is included. The course is not just one more dog training guide, although that section alone is worth the purchase price. The first part is for owners of a new dog or puppy, covering subjects such as diet and nutrition, house training, how to puppy-proof your home, choosing a vet, grooming, general health, etc. These are just some of the subjects covered to give you an idea of the wide range of information.

Several different dog training techniques are outlined in the course, including crate training, clicker training, dog whispering, and more. Following this, common dog behavior problems e.g., barking, aggression, digging, chewing, jumping, were covered. This chapter includes several case studies which I found to be particularly informative and interesting. Everyone loves a good story!

There is an interesting section which stresses the necessity for the dog owner to be the “alpha dog” in the household. Dog body language, vocal and facial expressions are also covered in this chapter. The commands and various positions are clearly explained with the assistance of excellent photographs.

I’ve outlined just a fraction of what is covered but I’m sure you will agree that it is impressive.

What I Particularly Liked

I had already heard great things about this course before I actually took a look at it so had high expectations. I must tell you that Secrets to Dog Training definitely does not disappoint – I’m absolutely blown away by the amount and high standard of the information provided for such a low cost. For a limited time, the incredibly low price is $39.95, which is tremendous value for such an excellent product.

I’m extremely impressed with the easy to understand language used in this book. My reading experience was enhanced by the fact that the book is broken down into small chapters, making it easy to understand and follow. Being faced with a wall of text can be quite overwhelming!

I was delighted to discover that Secrets to Dog Training includes obedience training for dogs of every age. So many dog trainers focus on puppies but training and behavior problems don’t necessarily end once a dog reaches adulthood.

I also like the fact that the Secrets to Dog Training team offers unlimited free consultations to anyone who buys the course. Just send the team an email and they will provide you with an individual answer for your specific dog behavior problem. A reply will be sent to you giving you plenty of useful tips and professional advice.

With a 60 day money back guarantee, you can’t lose when you buy Secrets to Dog Training.

Free Bonuses

As I’ve previously mentioned, the Secrets of Dog Training course is outstanding value; however, there’s even more being offered!

The following bonus items are included when you buy the guide: an audio book plus 5 extra ebooks on house training, security training, dog aggression, dog grooming, and secrets to becoming the alpha dog.

A 30 minute video, showing ways to solve your dog obedience problems, has been added as a new bonus with the Secrets to Dog Training guide. Peformed by the well-liked and respected dog trainer, Dave Johnson, it all seems very simple!

Secrets to Dog Training – My Conclusions

You’ve probably already gathered that I’m impressed. This guide made me very aware of just how little I understood dogs.

The material offered is comprehensive, detailed yet easy to understand, and highly effective. Your dog doesn’t need to have behavior or obedience issues in order for this book to be useful to you. Much of the information in the course would be of benefit to any dog owner wanting to have the best possible relationship with his dog.

I highly recommend Secrets to Dog Training to anyone who currently owns a puppy or dog or is thinking about adopting one.
